Job Description
SUMMARY
The production Operator role at US Nitrogen performs tasks necessary
to operate chemical manufacturing facilities for anhydrous ammonia,
nitric acid, ammonium nitrate solution and emulsions. The Operator
position is a progressive position responsible for monitoring and
manipulating process equipment to produce, manage, load and ship
product. Opportunity to progress from Entry Level Operator to Control
Board Operator is provided based on demonstrated proficiency to
perform the duties of each Operator position safely and efficiently.
This role is diverse in mechanical ability to perform general plant
operator duties. Work includes tank truck and railcar vessel opening,
loading and unloading, operation of pumps, piping, valves, and general
plant upkeep and maintenance. Also, assists other Operators or plant
personnel as needed. This job requires climbing stairs and ladders and
lifting. This job consists of outside elements where radiant heat or
cold is normal work environment, and rotating shifts.
TASKS
Perform typical operations requirements such as truck loading and
unloading, railcar loading and unloading, connecting/disconnecting
hoses, operating valves, troubleshooting equipment/operational
problems and operating plant equipment as needed.
Follow all plant safety guidelines such as: Confined Space, Work at
Heights, Management of Change, Hot Work, and Operating Procedures.
Control or operate chemical processes or systems of machines, using
Distributive Control Systems (DCS), Local Controls, or semi-automatic
equipment.
Record operating data, such as process conditions, test results, or
instrument readings.
Confer with technical and supervisory personnel to report or resolve
conditions affecting safety, efficiency, or product quality.
Draw samples of products and conduct quality control tests to monitor
processing and to ensure that standards are met.
Regulate or shut down equipment during emergency situations, as
directed by supervisory personnel.
Patrol work areas to ensure that plant conditions are stable
Work and/or assist in any area of the plant as directed by supervisory
personnel.
Take an active role in assisting with on-the-job training for other
operators who are working towards a qualification into additional
areas on site as directed by supervisory personnel
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Hazard Recognition - identify potential safety issues and make
recommendations for action or resolution.
Ability to wear and perform work in required personal protective
equipment (PPE) - full-face respirator, fall protection harness,
chemical resistant suits, face shield and any other PPE necessary for
the various tasks.
Able to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, batch
sheets, operating procedures and piping & instrumentation diagrams
(P&IDs).
Understand basic math skills, mechanics and fluid flow.
Investigate and troubleshoot process upset condition and take corrective action.
The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a
problem.
The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas
presented through spoken words and sentences.
The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others
will understand.
The ability to work at heights, navigate ladders and stairs, lift 50
pounds without assistance, and operate valves and other controls in
the field.
The ability and willingness to participate in emergency response,
including HAZMAT, Confined Space Rescue, First Aid and Incipient Fire
Brigade.
PREREQUISITES
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
21 years of age.
This is a safety sensitive position which requires employees to

her position to Human Resources.
