For more than 40 years, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has
assisted other states in responding to wildfires during the summer and
fall, when New Jersey's wildfire risk diminishes.
In 2025, the Forest Fire Service supported wildfire response efforts
in Alabama, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North
Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington and Wyoming,
deploying a combination of full-time and part-time personnel.
New Jersey crews served on modules, engines, incident management
teams, as helicopter crewmembers, and in other overhead positions. The
final crew of the year returned home from Alabama on Dec. 15.
Out-of-state deployments provide New Jersey's wildland firefighters
with valuable experience and strategies that they bring back home,
while also offering training opportunities. These assignments allow
firefighters to work toward national certifications in specific
positions through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
All expenses incurred during out-of-state assignments are reimbursed
by the federal government or the state requesting assistance. Each
deployment lasts 14 working days; if the need continues, a crew swap
is initiated with new personnel.
After a successful year responding to wildfires both in and out of
state, Forest Fire Service crews look forward to spending the holiday
season at home with their families.
