U.S.citizens are able to purchase and own fully automatic firearms providing you pass a rigorous background check and pay the Treasury Department $200 for a "stamp" that proves your ownership of that specific firearm. Also, only firearms manufactured prior to 1986 may be purchased by citizens. Since supply and demand are at play, fully automatic firearms are very expensive. An old M-16 can cost in excess of $18,000 in some cases, IIRC.
