saturday van rollover - approx 10 ejected - 2 died

initial dispatch - multi injuries - 3 or 4 attleboro cops sent -
attleboro fd sent BC1 + E1 + L1 + R1 (medic amb)

pd dispatched to 495 south 'by' exit 3

fd dispatched to 495 south 'prior' to exit 3

people attempting to load victims into POVs - we advised them not to do that

first cop to spot accident went wrong way - he could only see it in
his rearview mirror as he sped away from the scene

2nd amb sent approx 2 minutes into call - 3rd amb sent approx 5
minutes into call

first cop at scene said (at least) 5 bodies in road - 5 minutes into the call

cop told all ambs to go wrong way on ramp - message never relayed by
fd dispatcher - later BC told ambs to go wrong way on ramp

first amb arrived about 10 minutes into call

no medevacs called in first 20 minutes approx - iirc there were
medevacs used - maybe 2

local hospital - which has an ER with 1 MD and at least 1 RN I am sure
24/7 - and a MRI and ORs - apparently contributed nothing to this
incident - thats by design under the Trauma Plan pretty much - unless
the local hospital took some minor patients

all serious victims went to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence RI

attleboro is a city of approx 40,000 people with 5 fully staffed fire
stations - sturdy memorial is the hospital in the town

495 is an Interstate highway - it is patrolled by State Police -
maintained by State Dept of Transportation - there is no state fire
dept nor any state ambulances to serve the highway - fire and
ambulance service for the Interstates is provided by the local
governments - which is probably true for 99.99% of the Interstate
highways in the USA - except that some tunnels have their own fire
trucks (Colorado and TN come to mind) - some bridges have their own
fire trucks also (George Wash Bridge in NYC - maybe Tappen Zee in NY
and Hampton Roads VA and Lake Ponchatrain in LA) - cant think of any
Interstates that have their own ambulances

Boston MedFlight has 1 helo 20 miles away in Mansfield and a 2nd helo
at Plymouth which is maybe 40 miles away - and Bedford and N Andover
and Worcester and Westfield have medevacs - Massachusetts has at least
6 medevacs running pretty much 24/7- State Police have 3 helos iirc -
but they never do ems work

heh heh - 6 medevacs in Massachusetts and no dedicated LZ channels - heh heh
