A recent U.S. Geological Survey study analyzed 471 large watersheds in
the West and concluded that the sediment in more than one-third of
them could double by 2050.

The study looked at wildfire risk and erosion models, noting that 65
percent of the water supply in the West originates from watersheds
with fire-prone vegetation.
