Why do concrete buildings collapse? - 15 minute lecture

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lifCWsD4ckc

bottom line - water gets into rebar and it rusts and cause the
structural assembly to lose strength

nice lecture starts with the Greeks and their building designs

he speaks of the compressive and torsional characteristics of concrete

"torsion" = putting a twisting force or bending force into a concrete
beam or column

(he sorta muddles over this - iirc a concrete beam that is under a
load will experience compressive forces along the top and stretching /
expansion forces along the bottom - it is a little bit complicated)

(think about snapping a twig - you rip the twig apart across the top
but you smoosh the bottom parts together)
