overview
red and black flames are city stations with 3 or 4 man rigs in each station
blue are the county fire stations - all have paid men - 95% have call
men also - the blue flames have 2 paid guys on duty 24/7 - the blue
circles have 1 paid guy on duty 24/7 - each county station has at
least 1 engine and 1 tanker
the 3 purple stations are combined city / county stations - with 1
county paid guy on duty 24/7 backed up local city and / or county call
men or something along those lines
the red marker on the west end is the summer time cal fire station
the green house in the middle is the FWS summer station in the marsh lands
Dol Palos Y and El Nido are adjacent - each has 1 paid guy on duty
24/7 - but only 1 paid call guy to back them up - this might not be a
big deal if the 4 off duty paid firefighters stay near the stations
and work as landscapers or handymen or whatever - but those are very
rural areas - El Nido has a population of 330 - Dos Palos Y has a pop
of 323
we dont seem to have anything like this is New England that I can think of
most of Merced County seems to be farmland, marshs and housing tracts
- so the wildfire risk is probably not terribly high - unless the
homes are surrounded by flammable grasses that are continually drying
out
