County Fire Department had added 100-plus personnel on duty.
Dispatch got the call about a fire growing fast near Balcom Canyon at 8:51 a.m.
In a hangar at the Camarillo Airport, pilot Kristopher Tamburello and
his crew had just finished their initial checks. He took off and
dipped into an agricultural pond near the end of the runway to load up
with water. Another helicopter lifted off just after him.
"As soon as we lifted, we could see the header of smoke," Tamburello said."
