Slain University President (February 1992)
The most widely reported event involving this name in 1992 was the
death of Iwao Matsuda (72), the president of Chukyo University in
Nagoya.
Incident: On February 18, 1992, Matsuda was shot in the back in his
room at the Westin Hotel in Boston during an apparent robbery attempt.
Purpose of Visit: He was in Boston with his wife to sign a "sister
school" agreement with the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Impact: The killing caused significant shock in Japan and was used by
some Japanese politicians as an example of the "crime-ridden" nature
of American society.
