The Harwich Fire Department ended the calendar year 1984 after handling
the following emergency and non-emergency incidents:

In an effort to economize in every way possible, the Harwich Fire
Department has made a sincere effort to operate in a fashion and with
equipment which makes unnecessary the purchase or replacement of all
but the most essential items. The large numbers of emergency calls handled
in 1984 (1,936 calls) when compared to the 910 calls handled ten years
ago indicate emergencies within the Town are continuing to increase as
the Town continues to grow. Based on the obvious need to anticipate your
requests for adequate service, we will continue to recommend essential
equipment so that we will be able to meet your expectations.

III. FIRE PREVENTION SERVICES
During a very active construction year, the Fire Prevention activities of the
Harwich Fire Department were successful in keeping pace with the demand
for inspection of new residential and commercial properties. The
Massachusetts law requiring houses to be inspected for proper smoke
detector placement before sale kept department members extremely busy.
During these "resale" inspections, we also insist that the proper house
number be posted on the property and that it be clearly visible from the
street. In order to respond to your emergency quickly, it is essential that
the proper number be posted on your property.
As activity has increased, the funds collected for inspections, permits,
and special fees also increased:

IV. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
Except for the salaries of the fire/ambulance personnel, all other expenses,
including the cost of purchasing equipment and supplies, are covered by
the Harwich Rescue and Ambulance Fund. Your donations to this fund
for 1984 totalled $49,047.00. As your donations to this fund continue, the
Harwich Fire Department will maintain the best Emergency Ambulance and
Rescue Services available in the area. Through hard work and support from
Town officials, we have been able to meet new State ambulance regulations
promulgated during the past year with few problems. The Harwich Fire
Department has one of the few advanced life support ambulance services
within the State which is fully licensed and well staffed. We thank you for
your support and welcome your visit to either of our fire stations to view
our emergency medical vehicles, equipment, and to visit with our highly
trained personnel.
V. CONCLUSION
As the Harwich Fire Department concludes another year of service to
residents and visitors of Harwich, we ask that you become more acquainted

with the emergency fire and ambulance services provided through your tax
dollars and donations. Please take time to visit either the East Harwich
Fire Station or Headquarters Fire Station on Bank Street in Harwich Port.
We will gladly discuss your concerns, show our equipment, and explain
our services to you.
We thank all the other Departments within Harwich whose assistance
has been valuable in our efforts to accomplish our mission: TO PROVIDE
CITIZENS AND VISITORS WITH ADEQUATE LEVELS OF
EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND PROPERTY PROTECTION SERVICES
AT REASONABLE COSTS.

Report of the
Fire Department
Headquarters Building Committee
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
and Citizens of the Town of Harwich:
After completing its thirty-first meeting, the Harwich Fire Department
Headquarters Building Committee has come to several conclusions and has
made two specific recommendations to the Board of Selectmen and the
townspeople of Harwich regarding the future replacement of the existing
Headquarters Fire Station on Bank Street in Harwich Port.

In previous years the Committee reached the conclusion that the people
of Harwich wished the Fire and Ambulance Headquarters to remain at the
existing Bank Street site. The committee does not feel there is any reason
to believe this site preference has changed. We also have dismissed all
possible courses of action other than replacing the existing building.
Exhaustive studies by committee members and experts in the building trades
have all concluded that the present building, parts of which have been here
since 1929, would be excessively expensive and simply impractical to
renovate.
Although the preliminary plans for a new building were acceptable to
the citizens attending the 1984 Town Meeting, a subsequent vote failed
to fund the project. The Committee, after discussing reducing the size of
the station, yet still allowing for economical expansion at a future date,
discussed their work with the newly formed Town Capital Outlay Committee
and came to the conclusions that it would be in the Town's best interest
to perform additional soil testing and to complete all detailed drawings and
bid documents so that a specific cost could be brought before the voters
at a future Town Meeting.
These two decisions have been presented to the voters in the form of
articles at the 1985 Regular Town Meeting, and your Fire Department
Headquarters Building Committee urges all to support their efforts to take
these necessary steps toward replacing the present Headquarters Fire and
Ambulance Building.
