listening to a recording from 11/16 it seems that MIT Infirmary calls
Pro Ambulance when they need an ALS unit - if Pro does not have an ALS
unit available - they send Cambridge FD
MIT 8 (the student ambulance) also responded to this particular call
but they were dispatched by Pro - on the Pro TG - but MIT 8 answered
on the MIT EMS TG - and MIT 8 notified MIT Control about the call on
the MIT EMS TG
it all seems to be very fluid - and the MIT Ambulance might go out of
service during school vacations - so thats a major variable - and MIT
8 is BLS only
we also heard MIT 8 telling MIT Control that they were responding to
mutual aid calls in Allston and at 45 Mass Ave in Cambridge - the
latter call was "mutual aid to Pro" (not sure how that happened)
technically speaking - it seems that primary responsibility for EMS in
MIT buildings rests with MIT PD and MIT 8 - (although this might
change during the summer and during school vacations) - calls for
public areas / streets on the campus rests with either Pro EMS or
Cambridge FD - another major exception seems to be that MIT Infirmary
calls Pro for ALS cases - which is very odd because technically MIT 8
operates under the MIT Infirmary - or maybe MIT 8 operates under some
under nurse or staff person at MIT
in general in the boston area - it seems that the universitys and
colleges retain responsibility for EMS in their buildings - but
relinquish EMS responsibilities on roadways and sidewalks to the local
municipality
as a practical matter - since most of these colleges have their own
armed police - they take primary responsibility for any emergencies in
or near their campuses - but they dont have any firefighting equipment
- and MIT is the only college that has their own ambulance - so it
always is a cooperative effort to handle the emergency situations
in general in the usa - the local municipalities provide emergency
services for all locations within their municipality - unless it is
federally owned land or state owned land - (in which case there might
be a formal agreement for coverage)
please correct me if I am wrong
