SPENCER, Mass. —

According to Jeff Travers, the Senior First Assistant District
Attorney for the Worcester District Attorney's Office, when officers
arrived, they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound near a
multi-family home.

Several minutes later, police received a report of someone matching
the suspected gunman's description in the area of West Main Street in
Spencer.

The suspect was later identified by the Worcester County District
Attorney as Patrick Madison, 35. He was a Worcester Department of
Public Works employee.

Officers approached Madison, who produced a gun and began shooting at
officers, Travers said.

Madison fled to a nearby Family Dollar store at the Big Y Shopping
Plaza and barricaded himself inside.

The store was subsequently evacuated by police officers. While Madison
was barricaded inside a bathroom, he again began shooting toward
officers, striking an officer.

The officer, who is a member of the Millbury Police Department and is
part of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, or CEMLEC,
was shot several times and was rushed to UMass Memorial Hospital in
Worcester, Travers said.

Milbury Police Department Chief Brian Lewos said the officer who was
injured his officer suffered "multiple gunshot wounds to
non-life-threatening areas of the body." The officer, who was not
identified, is in stable condition and awaiting surgery.

A Family Dollar employee told NewsCenter 5 that he saw the suspect run
in and barricade himself in the store. He said he then heard what
sounded like gunshots and saw someone with what he believed to be a
gun.

"He yelled at me, and I don't remember what he said, but as soon as he
yelled at me, I just ran out the back door," the employee said. "It
was terrifying. I've never experienced anything like that."

Madison was killed in a subsequent shootout with police and died at the scene.

Video of the scene showed a large police response at the shopping plaza.

Another witness, Savannah Cotter, told NewsCenter 5 that she was with
her children at the time of the shooting.

Cotter recorded video of a large police scene near a McDonald's,
before three gunshots rang out and the video cut off.

In the video below, Cotter said police were beating a man before the
gunfire was heard.
