9 minute video from feb 2024
"PSEC 700 Radio Testing vs RFD UHF System Fireground Operations"
very cool - 9 minute video - seems that 'county' and 'cmd 3' were on
repeater - and 'tac 6' was direct - county was digital - city was
analog - at the very beginning digital crapped out with the fan
running which apparently had more to do with background noise than
radio waves / radio pathways
PSEC = the new county 700 mhz trunked radio system (TRS)
guessing that county 700 was on repeater since it crapped out totally
in the man down in the basement
to repeat - the radio systems are different in several ways - city is
460 mhz and analog - county is 700 mhz and digital - also - county is
trunked but city is not - but that probably was not a major factor
here
and there is also the difference between repeater channels and direct
channels - "direct" channels do NOT use a repeater - so you could call
the 'direct' channels 'nonrepeater' channels
they need to go back and test 700 digital direct - there should be
some direct channels in those new radios - thats the only way to get a
real 'apples to apples' comparison
on uhf - they might have MO3 also - so thats another complicating
factor - (MO3 would be a repeater in the fire truck) - of course the
county radio might have had a MO3 also
this was a great first step in the testing process - they need to do
more testing with more channels and in more sites - and with and
without the loud background noises
anyone who does not really understand how repeaters work will have a
very hard time figuring this video out
let me do a quick repeater explanation - a repeater is 2 radio boxes
that sit on the top of a hill - one box is a radio receiver box - it
listens for traffic on frequency 1 - the 2nd radio box is a radio
transmitter box - it transmits out on frequency 2 - there is a wire
that runs from the radio receiver box TO the radio transmitter box -
when the radio receiver box picks up a message on freq 1 - it
immediately ships it down the wire to the radio transmitter box - the
radio transmitter box then immediately transmits the message out via
freq 2
If Riverside City FD Command Channel 3 is 460.60 - then the repeater
is listening on 465.60 - and transmitting on 460.60
