los angeles county - reserve fire apparatus - quick thoughts

possibly we covered this before

the present situation in los angeles county is -

los angeles city fire department - lafd - 100 stations - 100 engines -
50 ladders - 100 als ambs - 50 bls ambs - 4 people per engine - 5
people per ladder - 2 people per amb

los angeles county fire department - la county fd - 175 stations - 175
engines - 35 ladders - 75 squad trucks - 100 private ambulances ish -
3 people per engine - 4 people per ladder - 2 people per squad and
private ambulance

verdugo controls approx 50 engines and maybe 15 ladders

long beach has 25 fire stations with approx 25 engines and 12 ladders

ANF has approx 25 type 3 wildland engines staffed by 5 people each -
they basically just run 1 day time shift - but they can and do run 7
days per week

there are 50 other fire stations approx in the smaller suburban fire departments

most agencies have 3 platoons - 1 platoon works at a time

the total count of units is approx 400 ty1 engines + 25 ty3 engines +
110 ladders + ems units

if all 3 platoons were put on duty and given engines and ladders to
staff - then the total available force would be 1200 ty 1 engines + 25
ty3 engines + 330 ladders

staffing would rise from 500 fire units to 1500 fire units

response times could drop from 6 minutes to 2 minutes if you put
everyone on patrol

note - having 25 year old and 30 year old reserve units is a policy choice

keywords - mobilization - upstaffing - up staff - staff up - beef up -
where the beef - up staffing - extra staff - extra units - escalation
- beefing up - augmented staffing - augmentation of staff - ramping up
- deployment levels - staffing levels - upscale - man up - extra
manpower - overtime - emergency callback - emergency activation -
staffing reserve fire trucks - staffing reserve apparatus - fire
severity staffing - conflagration control - earthquake duty -
earthquake response levels - extra manpower - disaster staffing - pre
disaster staffing - mobilized staffing - high hazard staffing -
extreme staffing - bolster staffing - high severity staffing - high
severity mobilizing - mobilization level - staffing level

another thing that could be done - staff the LAFD ambulances with
private EMTs and paramedics - that gives you another 100 engines -
maybe would be better to pair up a private emt with a city emt on the
ambulances - that would give you 50 more engines - and still provide
somewhat fully experienced amb crews
