Be careful of your wording. The Officer of the Deck on a submarine is
NEVER "in command". That responsibility rests with the Captain
alone...always. That said, the Officer of the Deck IS temporarily the
direct representative of the Commanding Officer and is reportable ONLY
to him in the chain of command. EVERY other crew member reports to the
Officer of the Deck in their role regarding ship operations, safety
and security - even those who outrank him.

(maybe a 'temporary commander" ish) - the FDs have 'shift commanders"
- seemingly more or less the same thing

they do 70 day tours

not sure what the work schedule is onboard exactly but they did say
that 1/3 of the crew is always asleep - which sounds like they work 8
hour shifts - maybe they have 2 hours "off" on every shift for a 6
hour work tour
