The Nazi Brownshirts, officially known as the SA (Sturmabteilung or
"Storm Detachment"), were the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi
Party. They played a pivotal role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power
during the 1920s and early 1930s by using violence and intimidation to
silence political opposition.
