this is hiring info for 2023 - might be same basic info as 2020
Huron Manistee National Forest is in Michigan
basically they have 5 dozers and 5 small brush trucks and 2 large
brush trucks and a 8 man hand crew
Fire Staff Officer = the top fire guy on the Forest - is on the
'staff' at the Superintendent's Office - the SO is the admin HQ for
the forest - they do the budgeting and policy work
FMO = fire management officer = like a deputy fire chief or a
battalion fire chief in a city FD
the Fire Staff Officer might also be called the Forest Fire Management
Officer or FFMO - which essentially means that he/she is the top guy
on the fire side and covers the entire forest
other Staff officers at HQ might be - Resources - Admin - Mtnce - etc
'Fuels' people work mostly on prescribed fires iirc - but I am sure
that they work to suppress some fires also
Forest Fuels Specialist = forest wide fuels specialist
Zone Fuels Specialist = fuel specialist for 1 fire zone
Zones are usually a combination of 2 or 3 ranger districts
'ranger districts' are the admin areas that report to HQ - you know
what I mean - for Huron Manistee NF the admin scheme is - SO / HQ
oversees 2 or 3 or more Ranger Districts - each Ranger District has a
District Ranger - basically the District Ranger deals with policy
issues at the local level - dont think they deal with fire issues much
anymore - guess they mostly deal with planning issues and keeping the
bathrooms clean and the dirt roads graded - not sure what else they
deal with
if you hunt thru the fire hire notice you can probably figure out
where all the engines are based - wildcad might tell you that also
