ABOUT THE FORESTS
The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests encompass approximately
630,000 acres in the mountains, piedmont, and coastal plain of South
Carolina. There are four ranger districts: Andrew Pickens, Enoree,
Francis Marion, and Long Cane. The Forests, collectively, are among
the most active forests in the Southern Region for their size and
continue to have many successes.
Francis Marion National Forest
The 260,000 +/- acre Francis Marion National Forest (FMNF) is located
in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina and is adjacent to the Santee
River, the Inter Coastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean and is one of
the most biologically and ecologically diverse forested landscapes in
the Southeast. The FMNF is comprised of several different landforms,
ranging from swamps, floodplains, stream terraces, side slopes, and
xeric ridges. The Forest contains over 30 different natural
communities ranging from dry longleaf pine/Turkey Oak woodland to
clay-based Carolina bay wetlands. Over 1,600 species of plants have
been documented on the Forest, including 32 species of orchids, 22
species of ferns, and 12 species of carnivorous plants. There are
approximately 280 miles of perennial streams and 150,000 acres of
palustrine, riverine, lacustrine, and estuarine wetlands on this very
diverse district. The district office is located in Huger.
Sumter National Forest (includes the Enoree, Long Cane, and Andrew
Pickens Ranger Districts)
The Forest covers approximately 380,000 acres on three units in South
Carolina (one in the mountains and two in the piedmont). The Forest
offers a wide range of recreational opportunities, including golfing,
hunting, fishing, white-water rafting and many other popular
recreational pursuits. The Sumter features a diverse topography,
geologic conditions, miles of streams, ponds, and lakes. The Forest
Supervisor's Office is located in Columbia, South Carolina. There are
currently three administrative units on the National Forest: Andrew
Pickens Ranger District in Mountain Rest, Enoree Ranger District in
Whitmire, and the Long Cane Ranger District in Edgefield.
Columbia Area (Supervisor's Office)
Columbia is an ideal, centralized location – two hours from the ocean
(Charleston/Myrtle Beach, SC) and three hours from the mountains
(Asheville, NC). It is also the capital of and the largest city in
South Carolina - home to the governor, state government, and state
legislature. Columbia offers multiple diverse and interesting cultural
and social opportunities for families and single people alike. It is
also close to larger metropolitan areas such as Atlanta (three hours)
and Charlotte (90 minutes).
The U.S. Census estimated Columbia's population as approximately
132,000 and 715,000 for the surrounding Lexington and Richland
Counties. Columbia's mid-sized airport serves four airlines, including
American, Delta, and United Airlines. Columbia has mild winters with
an average January low of 35°F and warm summers with an average July
high of 94°F and an average annual rainfall of about 46 inches.
