Boston TRACONLetter to Airmen: LTA-A90-33
Subject: Use of callsign when reading back visual separation instructions.
Cancellation: 06/16/2026 1200 (UTC)
BACKGROUND: Because the parallel runways at Boston Logan
International Airport (KBOS) are closely spaced, Boston Approach is
responsible to ensure pilot applied visual separation is employed
between aircraft arriving simultaneously. The application of pilot
applied visual separation often requires a large amount of back and
forth communication between controller and aircrew. This lengthy
communication exchange will occasionally cause an aircrew to get in
"conversation mode" on the frequency and neglect to use their
callsign. If the aircrew does not use their callsign when reading back
the controller's instruction to maintain visual separation, the
clearance has not technically occurred and the application of visual
separation is thereby invalid.
Information: Boston Approach is requesting that aircrews inbound to
KBOS remain vigilant during the lengthy verbal exchanges that occur to
achieve parallel runway pilot applied visual separation and to always
use their callsign when reading back all instructions from air traffic
control.
