I bet I know why the Payson FD went to the airport - crash is reported
on Command Net - someone at airport hears it and dials 911 -
dispatcher asks if crash is at airport - caller misunderstands and
says yes
or maybe there was a phone patch on the command net that was linked in
via a landline at the airport
or maybe the USFS fire dispatch center is at the airport - they got
the report via radio and dialed 911
or - someone messed up when calling in the crash at the crash site
each federal wildfire dispatch center has a "Aviation Mishap Plan" -
many of them say - 'dial 911 for help' - which could get you a 911
dispatcher a hundred miles from the crash site - I have never seen a
alternate 10 digit phone number listed for 911 in these Mishap Plans
