smoking bans were largely driven by insurance companies once it was
clear that secondhand smoke caused illness and death. If a company
wanted to be covered by worker's comp, they had to ban smoking indoors
Seatbelt laws, indoor smoking bans, and school requirements for
childhood vaccinations met some resistance for a while, but they
weren't used as a political weapon to divide the country in order to
win elections.
