12(a) Agency Jurisdiction. The mission of the Virginia Department of
Forestry (DOF) is to protect and develop healthy, sustainable forest
resources for Virginians. DOF was established in 1914 to prevent and
suppress forest fires and reforest bare lands. Since the Department's
incepHon, it has grown and evolved to encompass other protection and
management duties including: protecting Virginia's forests from
wildfire, protecting Virginia's waters, managing and conserving
Virginia's forests, managing state-owned lands and nurseries, and
managing regulated incentive programs for forest landowners.
