berwick is in york county on the new hampshire border - they have
fulltime fd and fulltime pd - and are more or less surrounded by the
same - but elliot might be a vol fd still
Stewarts has begun approaching the municipalities it serves to request
financial contributions toward EMS services. Historically, Berwick has
not paid for ambulance service, but changes in insurance
reimbursement—especially reduced Medicare rates—have created
shortfalls in Stewarts' revenue. Nearby towns like Somersworth are
already contributing (about $300,000 annually).
