CAL FIRE has invested in a complete overhaul of its helicopter fleet,
updating to the capable and rugged Sikorsky CAL FIRE Hawk. We have
also begun utilizing large Chinook helicopters retrofitted to work at
night with night vision technology and capable of dropping up to 2,500
gallons of water or retardant in a single drop. This year we
contracted four Chinooks and two night-qualified helicopters to
coordinate activities at night. These aircraft were instrumental in
bringing a big punch to our nighttime abilities. CAL FIRE's dedication
to integrating innovative technology reflects its broader mission to
stay ahead of increasingly severe wildfire threats. With tools like
nighttime helicopters, the agency is not only protecting lives and
property but also setting a new standard for wildfire response in a
changing climate.
