If you hear an aircraft, but do not see it and try to locate it,
follow this procedure......... Divide the space you can see in 4
quarts. Then do NOT try to search the sky !!!!! Fix your eyes on the
center of the quart and keep looking at THAT center. You CANNOT search
the sky and locate a moving object. By looking at a fixed point any
disturbance in your periferal vision will draw your attention. After a
minute or so transfer to one of the other quarts. This way you WILL be
able to locate a moving object ( airplane ) . It take some time to get
used to, but once mastered you will be able to find the aircraft more
acurate and way faster. Have fun. ( you might even practice by looking
at the video )

divide sky into quarters - look at center of quarter - your peripheal
vision will find the plane
=======================
there is a night viewing technique that we read about a long long time
ago - look to the side of your intended target - your cones and rods
are more numerous when you look to the side of the intended target -
can confirm it (still) works for me
