FOREST ASST FIRE MGMT OFFCR

The Los Padres National Forest is conducting outreach for a
non-competitive not-to-exceed (NTE) 120-day Temporary Promotion or
Detail Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer (Deputy Fire Chief) at
the Supervisor's Office in Solvang, CA. The position is telework
eligible with the official workspace in Solvang, CA. The tentative
start date will be May 1, 2022 (Pay Period 9).


Brief Description of Job Duties: This position reports directly to the
Forest Fire Management Officer (FFMO). The incumbent serves as a
Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer (FAFMO) with responsibility
for assisting the FFMO to provide leadership and program direction for
the unit's fire and aviation management program. The incumbent is
responsible for coordinating the development of short and long-range
fire management program plans, fire management activities on the unit,
and integrating the forest's fire management program with other
disciplines and interagency partners to achieve goals consistent with
the Federal Wildland Fire Policy and agency manual direction. In the
absence of the immediate supervisor, the incumbent serves as the
acting FFMO.



Provides technical advice and coordinates the accomplishment of fire
management planning to support the development of forest land
management goals and objectives, including formulation of local
policies and objectives, the coordination between activities, and the
establishment of program priorities; Participates in the development,
utilization, and integration of forest fire management resources to
accomplish forest targets; Directs all aspects of the forest's fire
and aviation program; Responsible for coordinating the accomplishment
of the forest's fire management activities, program direction,
coordination, and evaluation of the fully integrated fire management
program; Continually evaluates and analyzes current program levels and
uses discretion to initiate changes or make recommendations to meet
changing conditions within the limits of current or anticipated
funding.



This is a secondary firefighter position under 5 USC 8336(c) (CSRS)
and 84122(d) (FERS). Prior wildland firefighting experience is
required



Fire and Aviation Management Program: The Los Padres National Forest
fire and aviation management program consists of the following
resources: Supervisor Office staff includes – a Forest Fire Management
Officer and Assistant Fire Management Officer, a Forest Fire Planner
with Forest Fire Training collateral duty, Los Padres Communication
Center (Dispatch), Forest Aviation Officer, Air Attack 07, Santa Maria
Airtanker Base (full service base);

District staff includes – five District Fire Management Officers
(Division Chief), ten Assistant District Fire Management Officers
(Suppression Battalion Chiefs with Fuels, Training, and Prevention
oversight responsibilities), twenty-five Type III Engines, three Type
II Tactical Water Tenders, three Type II Helicopter/Helitack Crews,
one Type I Helitanker, two certified Type I Interagency Hotshot Crews,
one Type 2 IA Crew (working toward Type I certification status), two
Type II Dozers, thirteen Fire Prevention Patrols, and two Type II
Call-When-Needed AD Handcrews. The FFMO serves as a forest duty
officer to manage day-to-day forest fire management operations, after
hour's mobilizations, oversight for initial attack incidents, and
provide the Forest Supervisor technical advice regarding needs to
manage extended attack suppression actions. The FFMO functions as the
leader of the Forest's Chief Officer Group and provides support as
needed to other functions on the Forest.
