suburban volunteer FDs in USA

in the usa - the suburbs of NYC (NY + NJ), Houston, and Philadelphia
have thousands of volunteer firefighters - but they dont respond to
medical calls - separate ambulance squads handle EMS

(when I mention 'vols', I mean 'unpaid' and 'very very very low paid'
and 'paid on call' firefighters - and typically they do not hang out
at the fire station waiting for calls afaik)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population

you can see here that NYC and Philly areas have high pop density

Chicago area has high pop density also - but all ambs are part of FDs
- so most FD vols have been phased out afaik

DC area used to have many vols - but they are being phased out also -
FDs run the ambs in the DC area

--------------------------

note - Detroit lost 5% of population over last 9 years - Cleveland,
Baltimore, Saint Louis, Shreveport, and Toledo also - guessing that
has something to do with black migration
