lets come up with a plan for fixing all the public safety radio
systems in New England
1. presently radio freqs are used from 30 Mhz to 900 Mhz - am and fm
and ssb and P25 and DMR and nexedge and motortrbo etc are used
2. presently coordination between municipalities is very weak - any
incident involving more than 5 public safety units can/will result in
bonked comms - like I have said before - the present systems are a
mile wide and an inch deep
3. presently there are millions of dead spots where a portable radio
cannot reach a dispatcher - rural areas - basements - large complexes
- etc
4. coordination with aircraft, ships, trains, industry, taxis,
truckers, utilities, etc is nearly non existant
5. some sort of patch between the planned FIRSTNET system and the
public cellular system is probably needed - imagine if a cop was
chasing some guy down an alley - the cop pushes a button on his radio
and immediately alerts every cellphones within 2 blocks - "which way
did he go?" - "someone just hopped the fence in my yard at 123 Main
St" - case closed - fireman crawls down burning hallway - "anyone up
here?" - "I am in room 234 and the smoke is very hot" - "hang on I
will be there in 15 seconds" - case closed again
6. the only other solution might occur if the price of SDR radios
comes way down - what would it take to convert a $25 Baofeng radio
into an 'all band' 'all mode' public safety radio? - maybe $5 in
software and a $5 waterproof case? - the radio already has antenna /
battery / case / keyboard / display / receiver / transmitter
