Making cars more efficient
occupants of smaller cars are at a disadvantage if they collide with a
larger vehicle. But a 2007 study by the National Bureau of Economic
Research found that by reducing the average weight of all cars on the
road, CAFE standards "likely saved lives".
CAFE = corporate average fuel economy
a 2017 EPA analysis projected that CAFE standards would save consumers
almost $100 billion
